about

In the spring of 2013 Cliff and I started up Broke Folk Records. It began with the name which was just a joke but we really liked it and I really wanted to start recording music. So me and Cliff bought a 30 dollar audio interface off the internet. It came in the mail in about 3 days and that day we borrowed some mics and cables from The Key and had some of our friends come over to Cliff's basement. It took about 2 hours to set up the interface and to get everything ready and the first thing we recorded was Alex singing "I'll try anything once" which was written by Julian Casablancas of the Strokes. That night we released it because we were really proud of ourselves for making a song and just wanted to put it out so people could hear. The next couple of months we started recording more of our friends and we kept putting them online. We didn't, and still don't know if people liked it or were annoyed, but we kept doing it because it was fun. And that was the beginning of broke folk.

That fall almost all the people involved in that original summer project went on to school or to work and to begin the next part of their lives. We don't see each other that often. This compilation is a memento of those couple of months when we were together in a dank basement and ate deviled eggs and pizza and played songs we loved with people we loved. I hope the people who played these songs and the people who weren't playing and who were just in the room making noise and making us laugh never forget about each other and the wonderful times they shared. This is for all of them.
